D-Link release first 802.11ac router

Gigabit wireless for everyone!

D-Link today announced their latest home router, the The Cloud Gigabit Router (DIR-865L).

The 865L is D-Link’s first home router to adopt the soon-to-be-ratified 802.11ac standard, which allows for a theoretical throughput of up to a gigabit per second (1Gbps), matching the fastest home wired network speed available.

While the global standard is still yet to be 100% agreed, D-Link promises compatibility with their new Wireless AC Dual band Adapter (DWA-182).  Of course, the router will also communicate with “legacy” standards such as 802.11a – n.

The DIR-865L also boasts cloud connectivity which allows users to manage their network with ease. D-Link’s SharePort™ Mobile app for iOS and Android™ devices provides access to files and multimedia stored on a USB drive, meaning music, video, and photos can be streamed or transferred from the connected drive to multiple mobile devices.

D-Link promise that this router is “ideally suited to media buffs, gamers and households that need high performance to conduct multiple tasks or run many applications over the network at the same time”.  Of course, this would depend on the devices that you’re connecting too.  If all of your devices use the older 802.11n spec then you’re not going to get much in terms of a performance boost, with the exception of using multiple devices at the same time.

Other features include:

  • Gigabit Ethernet
  • QoS management
  • IPv6 support
  • DLNA compatibility
  • Parental controls
  • Mobile apps for quick configuration of the router.

The DIR-865L won’t be cheap though, D-Link quote the RRP as £164.80 +VAT, we make that about £195 with VAT included.
