BUILD QUICK AND EASY TECHNICAL DRAWINGS WITH GOOGLE SKETCHUP

Blueprints in a jiffy

If you’ve ever tried to take on any form of DIY engineering or construction project you’ll know that things never quite translate that well if you try to go from an idea in your head to a finished product.

Sketches on the back of fag packets are good, but they often don’t match up with the finished project.

I’ve found this before and I was determined that my latest project wouldn’t go down that same road.

After a bit of research I stumbled across Google Sketchup which (among other things) is a fantastic tool for creating quick and easy technical drawings.

Here’s a video showing some of the basic functionality:

In the video I’m a bit gun-ho with the whole thing, but I’m just trying to show off some of the features the best I can.

The actual finished drawing came out very well and now I know exactly what materials I need and how big to cut all the pieces.

I even managed to mark up the screw holes on my finished drawing!

Google Sketchup can be downloaded here for Windows and Mac.

Have fun!
